1/yr
Once a year
i get off
a plane
in
Sofia.
It is always
winter.Once a year
i walk
the streets
of mud
and snow
and
smell
the gas
and dirt
of traffic:
too many cabs
yellow and small,
taking
people --
where?
the drivers
smoking,
the drivers
frowning
the airport?
the train station?
anywhere
away!
away from Sofia!Once a year
i follow the stray
dogs
in new hounds
they howl
down the
streets,
skinnier
than last
year,
rarely
chasing
the stray
cats,
themselves older &
hungrierOnce a year
i stroll
with my
friends --
warm smiles
on their faces --
like last year,
they
love men
who
don’t
love them
and wear
coats that
don’t keep
them warm
but look
cool.Once
a year
i’m
home.
