The man just came back.   The daughters ran.   each morning at three she awoke with the need   to peer through the opening in the bedroom curtain   fully expecting to see him there on the streetcorner   illuminated by the sign summoning out-of-towners to the new casino   each morning she arose   and held her breath until she’d checked   but the street remained empty   the beast had not returned
